3 Can’t Miss DC Races to Run this Winter
The DC area is known for being one of the fittest regions in the country. In fact, the American College of Sports Medicine ranked Arlington the #1 fittest city in 2018. Clearly, exercise is an important part of Washingtonian’s lives. Residents at Park Van Ness are fortunate to have both the onsite fitness center filled with cardio machines as well as miles of trails behind the property in Rock Creek Park to get their blood pumping! This entire region is full of healthy exercise lovers with a competitive spirit. To appease all these fit folks, there are numerous races and running events hosted throughout the year.
Here are three great local races for those who relish the thrill of running in the cold!
Battle of the Pigskin

This popular Georgetown run benefits the charity Operation Enduring Warrior, which helps rehabilitate wounded vets, and allows runners to either participate in-person or virtually. Join the fun on February 3rd, 2019 for either the 5K or Half marathon Battle of the Pigskin running event. This race is a particularly great option for Park Van Ness residents who have experience running on softer trails. The bulk of the run takes place on the packed-dirt C&O canal with the start/finish line right under Key Bridge on Water Street in Georgetown. The Half starts at 8 in the morning and the 5K runners begin just a few minutes behind them at 8:30. Registration fees are $30 for the shorter distance and $60 for those attempting the full 13.1 miles.
Cupid’s Undie Run

On Saturday, February 9th, join in the fun with Cupid’s Undie Run. This race attracts those runners who really don’t mind the winter chill! From 12-4 pm runners line up at the Penn Social start line and gear up for a party and fun run in their skivvies! It’s a little silly, but it’s all for a good cause. The Undie Run benefits Cupid’s Charity — an organization created to help end the rare genetic condition neurofibromatosis. This run costs $40 if you book your spot ahead of time and $50 if you join in the day of. Report to 801 E street NW on race day!
Rock ‘n Roll Marathon

The Rock ‘n Roll Marathon is one of the more popular races in the DMV. Luckily, for those who haven’t quite mastered that distance, there are half marathon and 5K options on the same day. The March race date can make the weather somewhat unpredictable, but the musical performances spread out along the race route pump you up even if it’s chilly outside. The cost to participate in this run is $62 for the 5K’ers, $122 for those attempting the half marathon, and $142 for full marathoners. The marathon start line can be found at 14th and Constitution street NW. Join the thousands of runners on March 9th this year for a race through the streets of DC before spring is upon us!
