How To Stay Cool On Hot Summer Afternoons In DC
With Memorial Day comes the unofficial start of summer. However, recently most of us have been feeling the heat and humidity set in already. Here are a few ways to stay cool during these summer months.
Frozen treats
When it’s really hot out, there might not be a better way to cool off than enjoying a delicious, frozen dessert or snack. Luckily, the D.C. area has a number of good options. Head down to Dolcezza in Dupont and try some of their handmade gelato. Or, for something a little different, go to Pleasant Pops in Adams Morgan for one of their unique popsicles. Whichever one you choose, you won’t be sorry.
Fun at the zoo
Now naturally being able to enjoy some outside-time is one of the best parts of summer. If you want to do something fun but also enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a unique way to get wet, head on over to the National Zoo. At the Great Ape House, there are a number of fun activities including an orangutan rope pull and a wet zone. The wet zone has two misting showerheads that are only controlled by the apes. What a cool way to beat the heat!
Relaxing in the shade
If you’re not up for doing a whole lot, there’s still plenty of options to cool off. You could also go with the classic option — seeing a movie. If you haven’t been, it’s worth it to go to the historic, single screen Uptown Theater. After the movie, you could always go relax at a rooftop bar. The D.C. area has plenty of options, and many of them them have covered sections so you stay out of the sun. A nice, cold, refreshing drink is always a go-to during the summer.
If there’s one thing that is going to be guaranteed this summer, it is that it will be hot and humid. D.C. never seems to fail on that front. So if you’re looking to cool off, use these tips for a little inspiration. There’s something for everyone during the D.C. summer!
