DC just endured one of the longest streaks of 90 degree days in history and this July is looking to be one of the hottest ever on record. With scorching temps and many indoor dining and entertainment options closed due to the pandemic, Washingtonians need to get creative when it comes to staying cool this summer.
Here are a couple ideas to survive the heat wave in DC this summer.
Get Gelato at Bread Furst
Bread Furst has done a great job of adapting its ordering and payment system with the Coronavirus restrictions in place. Many of the favorite baked goods are being sold in bulk bags to go for easy ‘grab-and-go’ purchasing. Aside from decadent french pastries, Bread Furst has some of the best gelato in town. They usually only have four to six flavors at a time, but you can be assured that every scoop will be creamy and quintessentially European.
Seek Shade in Rock Creek Park
Luckily for Park Van Ness residents, one of the best shady trails in the city is just outside the apartment building. With so many pools and splash parks closed, Rock Creek Park is a much needed oasis within city limits. Bring the kids, bring your pup, and cool off with your toes in the water. Be cautious not to get any in your mouth and don’t go in the water after a heavy rain, but enjoy the cooler temps and shady trails during this Washington heat wave!
Find a Swimming Hole Just Outside the City
There are a number of incredible swimming holes not far from DC that are absolutely worth the drive. Scott’s Run Nature Preserve trails lead to an amazing waterfall / watering hole just a few miles downstream from Great Falls. You can also cool off at Cunningham Falls in Maryland (about an hour’s drive from NW DC) or check out Blue Hole in George Washington Jefferson National Forest (approximately 2.5 hours from the District).
This summer, the weather in DC has been on par with that of Houston, TX. In other words — hotter than ever! Hopefully these three options help you stay cool during the stick summer months in Washington!
