In the Washington DC area, this summer has been one of the hottest on record. Meteorologists reported more than 17 consecutive days above 90 degrees Fahrenheit and we’ve still got a few months to go. Luckily, residents of Park Van Ness have lots of frozen dessert options to help them beat the heat this July. Check out a few of our favorite offerings in the neighborhood to cool off on a hot day.
Bread Furst Gelato
Bread Furst is known for sublime pastries, handmade bread, and cozy coffee drinks, but this neighborhood bakery also serves delicious gelato during the summer months. While there are only a handful of flavors to choose from, they typically have the classics — chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and a seasonal flavor to round out the selection. You can also order a scoop of gelato atop a warm brownie for a delicious brownie a la mode.
Potbelly Milkshakes
Just across the street from Park Van Ness, next to the Gold’s gym, you’ll find Potbelly’s, a casual deli that’s always bustling at lunchtime. While Potbelly’s is known for its sandwiches, they have fantastic milkshakes that really hit the spot on a hot summer’s day. They’re reasonably priced and come in all the basic flavors. The best part is the little butter cookie that’s nestled in between the straw and the cup — it’s a Potbelly classic.
7-Eleven Slurpees
Down the street in Woodley Park, just across from the National Zoo, there is a 7-Eleven with a year round Slurpee machine. If dairy products aren’t your friend, grab a sugary, frozen drink from nearby. Though the flavors vary some depending on the time of year, the blue raspberry is always a good choice. Pick up a 7-Eleven Slurpee before wandering through the zoo on a steamy day, or if you’re looking for a caffeinated pick-me-up, grab a frappuccino at the Starbucks next door. Don’t forget, free Slurpees are offered on July 11th (7/11) every year!
Of course, residents of Park Van Ness can beat the heat in the rooftop pool or in the shade of a Rock Creek Park trail, but if you’re looking to satisfy that sweet tooth, check out these nearby shops for cold, delicious desserts.
