Hike or Run in Rock Creek Park
Lace up your running shoes and hit the trails! Rock Creek Park is home to hundreds of miles of hiking trails. These trails stay cool in the summer and are the perfect way to get in touch with nature while living in an urban environment. Hike or jog from the Soapstone Valley trailhead in Park Van Ness’ backyard and work up a sweat any time of year.
Grab a Latte at Bread Furst
Bread Furst has some of the best French pastries in the city, but their espresso drinks are also top notch. Skip Starbucks and head north a block to grab a latte (hot or iced) from this neighborhood gem. If you’re craving a midmorning snack, the pain au chocolat or cinnamon-laced monkey bread are both a safe bet.
Book a Mani/Pedi at Nail Avenue
The Nail Avenue salon is one of the most popular in the area among Washington women. For affordable, long-lasting nail care, this salon is your best bet. It can get crowded, so make an appointment — even if you’re planning to go mid-day.
Refuel with a Potbelly Sandwich
Grab a sandwich (or a shake!) from this popular national sandwich shop. The chicken salad is one of the tastier items on the menu, but any of their classics are great. Order your meat on a skinny, wheat sub for a lighter option.
Catch a Flick at the Uptown Theater
You can hop on the red line and take it one stop from Van Ness / UDC to Cleveland Park, or you can meander slowly down tree-lined Connecticut Avenue and arrive at the theater in less than 20 minutes.
There’s lots to do in the area to fill your day, but there are a few of our favorite activities. If you’re in the mood to venture a few minutes further from home base, you can explore The National Zoo in Woodley Park or even spend a few hours walking around The National Cathedral and its gardens.
